Ms. Ok Sil Joanne Kim was born in Seoul, Korea. Ms. Kim studied the violin from a very young age and was able to master the instrument through proper study and practice, allowing her to develop the skills and techniques required for admission to Hanyang University, one of Korea’s most prestigious universities.  While attending Hanyang University she earned her Bachelor Degree in violin performance.

 

After graduating from Hanyang University, Ms. Kim decided to further her music education by coming to America. Here she studied violin performance and chamber music with Catherine Gray at the Lewis and Clack College in Portland OR. One year later she moved to Boston and studied a personalized program under Carol Lieberman  at Boston University while at the same time studying music theory  at the Longy School of Music. Finally Ms. Kim moved to Philadelphia to study with the great violinist Helen Kwalwasser, where she received her M.M (Master of Music, Violin Performance) from Combs College of Music and Temple University, Philadelphia, PA.

 

With over 20 years of experience in performing and teaching, Ms. Kim is passionate about instructing and motivating students to practice and enjoy music.  Her expertise encompasses instruction on all levels. In Korea she instructed and successfully prepared many students for auditions with acceptance into music colleges and graduate programs. Ms. Kim has also prepared violin and viola students for the High School and Intermediate (Junior High School) North Jersey Regional Orchestra and All- State Symphony Orchestra. All were successful and entered into the programs under Ms. Kim’s guidance. Not only does Ms. Kim teaches the violin but also Fundamental Theory and Harmonic, singing the Solfeggio and clapping the rhythms in the lessons. 

 

Ms. Kim’s performance experience includes a tour with the Lewis and Clark chamber orchestra as 2nd violin soloist, performance in China in 1990, numerous solo recitals at the Art Center in Seoul, Korea, performing with the North Jersey Symphony Orchestra as a soloist, performances at the Tenri Cultural Center of New York and Cliffside Park Public Library of New Jersey.  In addition to music, Ms. Kim has a passion for social activism and has organized many benefit concerts on behalf of disabled orphans and children whose parents are incarcerated.
